چکیده

OBJECTIVE This study investigated the immediate effects of repetitive neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)-assisted grasp-and-release activities on the hand of patients with tetraplegia. METHOD Three participants with C-5-C-6 tetraplegia underwent grasp training with sequential application of NMES to wrist extensors, finger flexors, and finger extensors to assist participants in grasping and then releasing balls. Before the intervention, participants were assessed with the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test and the Box and Block Test. They were evaluated with the same measures after the first and eighth sessions of intervention. Participants participated in eight 30-min sessions over 14 days. RESULTS Within-participant improvements in performance were observed in all outcome measures. Subtests of the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test requiring grasping function showed the greatest improvements. Participants reported reduction of spasticity and more effective grasp. CONCLUSION NMES-assisted grasp paired with repetitive task practice resulted in improved performance on functional tests and subjectively improved hand function in the participants.

Clinical experience of functional electrical stimulation for restoration of tetraplegic hand function

There are some Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) systems that restore upper limb functions in tetraplegia. Surface electrodes [1], percutaneous intramuscular electrodes [2] and totally implantable electrodes [3] are used for stimulation in these neuroprostheses. The FESMATE system, developed by the Sendai FES Projects in Japan, is a portable multi-channel FES system with percutaneous elec...

EEG-Based Asynchronous BCI Controls Functional Electrical Stimulation in a Tetraplegic Patient

The present study reports on the use of an EEG-based asynchronous (uncued, user-driven) brain-computer interface (BCI) for the control of functional electrical stimulation (FES). By the application of FES, noninvasive restoration of hand grasp function in a tetraplegic patient was achieved. The patient was able to induce bursts of beta oscillations by imagination of foot movement. These beta os...

Restoration of tetraplegic hand function by use of the neurocontrol freehand system.

Nine tetraplegic patients with C5 or C6 level spinal cord lesions had the Freehand System, an eight channel Functional Electrical Stimulation device, implanted to allow of hand opening and grasp. This paper describes the surgical implementation of the system and the challenges encountered. Seven of the subjects are currently daily users of the device. One subject is unable to use the system due...

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on pain intensity in patients with chronic low back pain: a systematic review of literature

Introduction: Low back pain (LBP) is common musculoskeletal disorder in today’s societies, which lead to inducing chronic pain and consequently pathological changes in brain function in most of the patients. Therefore, using effective intervention for controlling chronic pain in patients with LBP is very important. According to the evidence, some studies indicated that pain intensity is decreas...

Closed-Loop Neuroprosthesis for Reach-to-Grasp Assistance: Combining Adaptive Multi-channel Neuromuscular Stimulation with a Multi-joint Arm Exoskeleton

Stroke patients with severe motor deficits cannot execute task-oriented rehabilitation exercises with their affected upper extremity. Advanced rehabilitation technology may support them in performing such reach-to-grasp movements. The challenge is, however, to provide assistance as needed, while maintaining the participants' commitment during the exercises. In this feasibility study, we introdu...
